Box elder (form 5)

The back-swept upper portion of this sculpture along with the vertically expressed lines and the horizontal layout of red streaks comprises three characteristics of motion, making this sculpture a wonderful and energetic form. The negative space in center aligns with its mounting axis at its peaks  -a detail worth pointing out.

Box Elder is a maple species that can offer incredible red patterns which are the result of the tree's immune system fighting the presence of a fungus that a beetle has brought into the tree. This is why there are small holes wherever redness exists. The permanence of color is assured as a synthetic dye has been matched and applied via airbrush as precisely as possible to prevent fading in time, as box elder is known to do (with UV and oxidation exposure). The finish is UV resistant polyurethane. 14.5 inches tall.
