“Liquid Tension” is made of black walnut. It was harvested from a tree that fell during a large storm that hit Rockford, Illinois in 2003. It is carved purely by subtraction, of one sold piece.

 

This sculpture stands firmly balanced left to itself, yet it is fastened to a granite base. The tall edge on the right side of the sculpture is geometrically straight and square to its foundation. From there, its movements travel in a fluidic, free-form trail that give it the appearance of resisting gravity.

 

Several areas in its mass have been worked to a delicate thickness of less that one-eighth of an inch. The surface of “Liquid Tension” has been treated with linseed oil to retain the look of its natural grain.
