Box Elder is a maple species that can offer incredible red patterns which are the result of the tree's immune system fighting the presence of a fungus that a beetle has brought into the tree. This is why there are small holes wherever redness exists. The permanence of color is assured as a synthetic dye has been matched and applied via airbrush as precisely as possible, to prevent fading in time, as box elder is known to do (with UV and oxidation exposure).
